A blessing piece is different from the other intentions on this site in one important way: it is almost never bought for oneself. In Chinese practice the blessing object is a gift — given at a birth, a graduation, a new home, a long journey, or the start of a difficult year. The tradition assumes you are buying it for someone else.

The forms carry the wish

Chinese blessing jewelry works by shapes with attached meanings, and the two most common are worth knowing before you choose.

The peace buckle (平安扣) is a plain disc with a hole — a form so old its origin is debated, but whose name is unambiguous: 平安, safe and untroubled. It is traditionally given to travellers and to new parents.

The gourd (葫芦) is a pun before it is a shape: 葫芦 sounds like 福禄, fortune and advancement. It is the form worn by people hoping for a good year.

And the blossom, in jade or in quartz, expresses the wish for things to come into flower — the one most often given to students.

The stone underneath

Jade is the material this intention belongs to. It has been carved in China for more than five thousand years, used for ritual objects and imperial seals long before it became jewelry, and Confucius himself compared its qualities — warmth, quiet lustre, toughness — to those of a virtuous person. Because the stone is bound up with the idea of bestowing, jade is traditionally a gift stone rather than a purchase for oneself.
