Different traditions of quiet

The 108-bead jasper mala follows the Buddhist practice of counting breaths or mantras, one bead at a time — the original fidget object, refined over a thousand years. Snow phantom quartz holds ghost-white inner layers, a traditional image of thoughts settling like snow in still water. Fluorite and chalcedony are the soft-colored stones Chinese tradition associates with clear, unhurried thinking, and serpentine — 岫玉, one of China’s four famous jades — has been carved into calming talismans since the Neolithic.
