Cinnabar Jewelry

Cinnabar (朱砂, zhūshā) is the most Chinese of all jewelry materials. Its vermilion red colored the seals of emperors, the pillars of temples, and the ink that signed a dynasty's decrees. For over two thousand years it has been carved into amulets worn close to the body — and this collection continues that line with four traditional forms.

Four classic forms

The Guanyin pendant carries the bodhisattva of compassion, the most widely worn protective figure in Chinese culture. The Laughing Buddha brings the tradition of joy and easy fortune. The peace buckle (平安扣) is the smooth disc given as a wish for safety — one of the oldest continuous forms in Chinese carving. The Wushi tablet (无事牌) is deliberately blank: "may nothing trouble you."

About the material

Our pieces use stabilized, jewelry-grade cinnabar that is sealed for safe daily wear — it does not shed material against the skin. Like all traditional cinnabar jewelry it is worn, never ingested, and we recommend removing it before bathing and keeping it away from small children. Cinnabar is a mercury sulfide mineral; the stabilization process is exactly why modern cinnabar jewelry exists.

Very few US stores carry authentic carved cinnabar. Each of ours is made to order, ships in 15–20 business days, and arrives gift-boxed with a card explaining its motif's history. Free US shipping over $65, 30-day returns.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What is cinnabar?

Cinnabar (朱砂, zhūshā) is the vermilion-red mineral that colored imperial seals, temple lacquer and protective amulets across Chinese history. Our cinnabar is stabilized and sealed for jewelry use, carved into traditional motifs and worn as pendants.

Is cinnabar jewelry safe to wear?

Yes for normal wear: jewelry-grade cinnabar is stabilized and sealed, so it does not shed material against the skin. As with traditional practice, it is worn — not ingested — and we recommend keeping it away from small children and removing it before bathing.

How long does shipping take?

Every piece is handcrafted to order and ships in 15–20 business days. US shipping is free on orders over $65; a flat $3.99 applies below that. 30-day returns.
