Tiger’s eye is the best known. It is a quartz in which crocidolite fibres have been replaced by silica and aligned, producing the shifting band of light the stone is named for — a cat’s-eye effect that moves as the stone turns. The tradition reads that moving band as steady nerve: something that responds to the angle it is held at, without breaking.

Garnet is the second. It is a family rather than a single mineral — the red varieties are the ones worn — and it has been set in jewelry since the Bronze Age. In the Chinese reading its deep red places it with Fire, the element of vitality and drive, which is why the tradition pairs it with wakefulness and forward motion rather than calm.

Obsidian belongs at the edge of this group. It is the protection stone, not the courage stone, but the two are traditionally worn together: the older idea being that resolve is easier to hold when you are not also guarding your back.
