Chalcedony is microcrystalline quartz (SiO₂, Mohs 6.5–7): countless microscopic crystals fused into a smooth, translucent body with a characteristic waxy luster. Agate, onyx and carnelian are all chalcedony varieties; the pale lavender "ice purple" we string is prized in the Chinese trade for its even, dreamlike color. What does chalcedony traditionally mean?

Ice purple chalcedony vs. amethyst — what's the difference?
Both are purple quartz, but structure separates them: amethyst is macrocrystalline (single visible crystals, transparent, often deeply saturated) while chalcedony is microcrystalline (translucent, even-toned, waxy).
